Taoism is not The Tao

It has been said that "The Tao that can be named is not the true Tao." Therefore, Taoism is the study of that which cannot be named but experienced.

Consider this: When a person refers to various aspects of themselves, they invariably use the word "my" - "my body," "my arm," "my mind," etc. But have you ever stopped to consider what the "my" is that has those features?

Upon deep examination of the question, you may find that although you can sense it, you cannot name it - that is Tao - Taoism is the study and contemplation of that unnamable force that is you, me, and the underlying principle of existence itself.

Harmonizing with the Tao

Although the Tao (Way) cannot be named, it can be experienced. Over the past 2,500 years, Taoists have developed various tools and techniques to explore the Tao, harmonize with it, and become one with it.

One of the most powerful tools at their disposal is the study and contemplation of nature and the underpinning laws that govern all its manifestations. Through studying nature, the Taoist becomes a living embodiment of the Tao and lives in harmony with it. This is why it has been said that Taoists practice Wu Wei (无为), or the art of accomplishment without action.

That may seem enigmatic, but consider the example of a fast-moving river. Most of us spend our lives trying to walk upstream, resisting the immense current of life, which constantly knocks us out of balance and makes us unsure of our footing. This is because we live our lives with ambition, thinking that the more we struggle, the more we can accomplish. Conversely, the Taoist effortlessly rides the current downstream and travels farther in his or her journey by flowing with nature instead of against it.

The Taoist doesn't mind which direction the current flows because he has no destination, only the willingness to flow with life, not against it.

This may be a difficult concept for those imbued with the Western mindset that life is like a battle and only the strongest conquer it. In truth, life is not like a battle unless one makes it so.
